Lecture on late Youngstown artist known for Depression-era works
EAST LIVERPOOL
Meredith Keenan will present a lecture April 10 at the Museum of Ceramics on late Youngstown artist Roland Schweinsburg and his work for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s 1930s Works Progress Administration. The 45-minute lecture will begin at 2 p.m. April 10 at the museum at 400 E. Fifth St.
Formerly a student intern at the museum, Keenan, of Calcutta, is majoring in history at Geneva College.
The museum is home to almost two dozen paintings by Schweinsburg, as well as the East Liverpool post-office mural that sparked the area’s interest in his work. The mural depicts the Bennett brothers, the pioneer commercial potters of East Liverpool.
It is one of more than 70 post-office murals in Ohio. As a result of the acclaim it received, the city’s chamber of commerce initiated dozens more paintings by Schweinsburg in a few years.
Portraits by Ivan Hoon of East Palestine, also a WPA artist, are also part of the museum’s collection.
This lecture is free with the cost of admission ($4 adults, $2 students) and includes refreshments. Call (330) 386-6001 for reservations. For more information, go to TheMuseumOfCeramics.org.
