Forums on sales tax

YOUNGSTOWN

Two public forums are set at the Covelli Centre concerning Mahoning County’s half- percent sales-tax renewal, which will appear on the May 4 ballot as Issue 3.

The first will be Tuesday featuring U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, and Anthony T. Traficanti, chairman of the county commissioners.

The second will be April 19 featuring state Sen. Joe Schiavoni of Canfield, D-33rd, and county Commissioner John A. McNally IV.

Both forums will start at 6 p.m.

Rape of girl alleged

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are investigating the reported rape of a 12-year-old girl by several teenage boys.

The South Side girl told police she was walking down Pasadena Avenue with a group of four boys and one girl at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The other girl went home, and the accuser continued walking with the boys until one dragged her into an abandoned house on Pasadena, she said.

The girl told police two of the boys took turns raping her as the other two boys just watched.

The accuser was taken to Forum Health Northside Medical Center for an examination. Police searched the abandoned house, but no arrests have been made.

Shooting probed

Police continue their investigation of a shooting on the city’s South Side that sent one teenage boy to the hospital.

The 16-year-old Lowell Avenue boy was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center at 6 p.m. Sunday with a gunshot wound to the hand and thigh. He was listed in stable condition.

The information on the shooting was made available to the press and public Wednesday.

According to witness statements to police, the boy and friends were standing in front of a house in the 200 block of Hilton Avenue when they heard a loud bang. The 16-year-old realized he had been shot immediately after hearing the bang, and a friend drove him to the hospital.

Vehicles broken into

The owners of eight vehicles at apartment complexes in the 4400 block of South Avenue reported them broken into. All the cars had windows broken. Four of the owners reported items including spare change being taken.

Owners of the other vehicles told police their cars were rifled through, but nothing appeared to be missing.

Eagle Heights caucus

There will be an open caucus at 1 p.m. today for Eagle Heights Academy Board of Education in the Resource Room at the school, 1833 Market St. An executive session follows the caucus.

Seasonal-job fair

Pennsylvania CareerLink of Lawrence County, 102 Margaret St., is offering a seasonal- job fair for military veterans and other job seekers from 1 to 4 p.m. April 8. Job seekers will be able to meet local employers who are hiring seasonal employees.

Free medical training

The Mahoning/Columbiana Medical Reserve Corps offers a free training opportunity at its 2010 Spring Conference to medical professionals who want to become Medical Reserve Corps volunteers.

The conference is from 5 to 8 p.m. April 14, with dinner and registration at 4:45 p.m., at Holiday Inn Boardman, 7410 South Ave. Contact Medical Reserve Corps Coordinator Susan Kovach at (330) 270-2855, ext. 132, for more information or to register by Friday.
