Valley teams high in ratings


Cardinal Mooney and East Palestine’s football teams are No. 1 in their regions.

Nineteen area football teams are listed in this week’s OHSAA computer ratings, released on Tuesday.

The ratings determine the playoff teams at the conclusion of the regular season.

Eight teams are ranked 1-4, meaning they would be in line to play host to a first-round game in the postseason.

Cardinal Mooney (5-0) in Division III, Region 9, and East Palestine (5-0) in Div. V, Region 17, are ranked No. 1.

Howland (5-0) in Div. II, Region 5; Poland (5-0) in Div. III, Region 9, and Girard (5-0) in Div. IV, Region 13, are all ranked No. 2.

In fact, Mooney (14.8000) and Poland (12.0557) have the two-highest point totals in all of Div. III.

Points are accumulated for winning games and for games won by defeated or tied opponents.

East Palestine has the third-highest point total in all of Div. V, behind Coldwater and St. Henry.

McDonald (5-0) is No. 3 in Div. VI, Region 21, and Lakeview (3-2) in Div. IV, Region 13, and Crestview (5-0) in Div. V, Region 17, are both ranked No. 4.

Crestview plays host to East Palestine on Friday in a an Inter Tri-County League showdown.

In Div. I, Region 1, Warren Harding (3-1-1) is ranked No. 5 and Austintown Fitch (4-1) is ranked No. 7.

In Div. II, Region 5, Canfield (4-1) is ranked No. 5, while Hubbard (4-1) is ranked No. 6 in Div. III, Region 9.

Also, Campbell Memorial (4-1) is ranked No. 8 in Div. IV, Region 13, while Ursuline (2-2) is No. 7 in Div. V, Region 17, and Springfield (4-1) is No. 10 in the same region.

Also in Div. VI, Western Reserve (5-0) is No. 6 and Warren JFK is No. 9 in Region 21, while Wellsville (4-1) and Columbiana (3-2) are ranked 7-8, respectively, in Region 23.

Toledo Whitmer has the highest point total in Div. I, while Louisville has the highest in Div. II, and Chagrin Falls is the overall top point-getter in Div. IV.

Mogadore has the highest point total in Div. VI.

The playoffs are scheduled to begin on Nov. 6-7 with the state championships scheduled for Dec. 5-6 in Canton and Massillon.
