Business-tax evasion

CLEVELAND — A Girard man has been sentenced to three years’ probation, including one year of electronically monitored house arrest, and fined $10,000 for trying to evade employment taxes.

John D. Matuszwski, who pleaded guilty to a one-count information, owed those taxes with respect to wages he paid as sole proprietor of the Matuszwski Roofing and Siding business he operated in Niles.

Between 2003 and 2006, he paid his employees by check and cash without withholding Social Security and federal income taxes as he knew he was required to do, the U.S. attorney said.

Shortly after IRS agents executed a search warrant at his business, Matuszwski filed delinquent employment-tax returns and paid his $220,299 employment tax liability. He was sentenced Tuesday by Judge Lesley Wells of U.S. District Court.
