Domestic Violence Awareness Month proclaimed

LISBON — The Columbiana County Commissioners on Wednesday proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Nickie Ostick, the victim’s outreach coordinator for Christina House, the women’s shelter in Lisbon, said that violence is going down.

There was no jump in cases because of the poor economy, she said. Court protective orders and prosecutions for abuse have helped reduce cases.

Local events will be held later in the month. In 2010, domestic violence awareness month will move to May, because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
