Hughes’ late goal leads Boardman past Champion


CHAMPION — Heather Hughes scored the only goal of the game on an assist from A.J. Davis at about 16 minutes into the second half to lift Boardman past Champion 1-0 in a girls soccer game Saturday.

Spartans’ goalie Cheyenne Khatib had three saves for the Spartans (8-2).

Champion (4-3-4) goalie Taylor Petersal had 12 saves.

JVs: 0-0.

Salem 1, Mooney 0

SALEM — Abi Pasco scored the lone goal with an assist from Lauren Rupp for the Quakers (8-1-1).

Keeper Allison Thompson had 12 saves for the winners.

JVs: Salem, 1-0.

Fitch 2, Niles 0

AUSTINTOWN — Meghan Shonce and Kelsey Martin scored for the Falcons (4-3-2), while Martin and Kristen Schmidt provided an assist apiece.

Niles goalie Sara Scarnecchia made 12 saves, while Fitch goalie Ali Tolich stopped two shots.

The Falcons out-shot the Red Dragons, 14-2. Niles is 4-5.

JVs: Fitch 3-0.

Poland 4, West Branch 0

POLAND — Chelsea Conzett had one goal and one assist to lead Poland (6-1-1), which outshot West Branch, 19-4.

Tatum Marucci, Abbie Chandler and Kelsey Malenic each added a goal while Rachel Ames had an assist.

Poland goalie Abbie Frank had three saves.

West Branch goalie Sierra Woolf had 13 saves.

JVS: Poland won 7-0.

Boys

Poland 4, Lakeview 1

CORTLAND — Taylor Malaniak had two goals, while Matt Mrozek and Kevin Krumpak had one apiece for the Bulldogs (7-0-1).

Lakeview (5-3-3) got credit for a goal following its entry from a Poland player.

The Bulldogs had 20 shots-on-goal to Lakeview’s six.

Lakeview goalkeeper Alex Rosowicz made 16 saves, while Poland goalie Cooper Kostelic had six stops.

JVs: Poland, 3-1.

Perrysburg 3, Mooney 1

PERRYSBURG — Senior Sean Sikich — with an assist from Thomas Beck — had the lone goal for Mooney (5-4-2).

Karter Sell, Anthony Dangelo and Nate Smith scored for Perrysburg (8-3), the state’s No. 11-ranked Division I team.

Both Mooney goalie David Perry and Perrysburg’s Jermey Ashley had seven saves.

JVs: Perrysburg, 2-0.

Ursuline 2, Maplewood 0

MECCA — A pair of freshmen scored in the first half for the Irish.

Mike Lasko scored a goal after 15 minutes into the first half, followed by John Crowe’s tally six minutes later.

Assists came from senior Ben Smith and junior Mike Vanes.

Sophomore Rob Marsch had 10 saves in goal for Ursuline.
