Husband, wife get degrees

A husband and wife with ties to the Mahoning Valley received their doctoral degrees last month from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind.

David Gerberry, son of James and Linda Gerberry of Mineral Ridge, earned his doctorate in mathematics with a specialization in computational science and engineering.

A 1998 graduate of Mineral Ridge High School, where he was valedictorian, Dr. Gerberry graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Youngstown State University in 2002.

He is a postdoctoral scholar involved in disease dynamics in the David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California, Los Angeles.

His wife, Carla V. Liguore Gerberry, is the daughter of Vincenza Liguore of Worthington, Ohio, and Anthony Liguore of Boardman.

After graduating from Hampton High School in Alison Park, Pa., in 1994, Dr. Liguore Gerberry earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics education magna cum laude from YSU in 2003. She earned her master’s degree in education from Purdue in 2004. Her doctorate is in mathematics education.

She is an assistant professor in the department of mathematics and statistics at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, Calif.

SCOUTS

Receives Eagle award

Michael Furst, 18, of Cortland, a son of Keith and Mary Ann Furst, recently received his Eagle Scout Award at a court-of-honor ceremony at Candlelite Knolls.

He is a member of Troop 54 of Cortland, and his scoutmaster is his father. He joined the troop in 2001 and was a member of Cub Scouts in 1997. He is the troop historian and has been patrol leader and senior patrol leader.

He earned 38 badges and the Camper Award for participating in summer camp from 1997 through 2008. He also attended National Boy Scout Jamboree in 2005, Philmont Scout Ranch in 2007 and was a member of Camp Stambaugh staff in 2008 and 2009.

Furst is a 2009 graduate of Lakeview High School and is attending Ohio State University majoring in electrical and computer engineering.
