Rabbi Saperstein to lecture here


YOUNGSTOWN — Rabbi David Saperstein, recently selected by Newsweek magazine as No. 1 on its list of most influential rabbis in America, will lecture at Congregation Rodef Sholom, 1119 Elm St., at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8.

Rabbi Saperstein is widely regarded as an expert on social justice issues and causes, and is political activist on Capitol Hill.

As director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, he represents the national Reform Jewish Movement. He has served on the boards of the NAACP, People for the American Way, Leadership conference on Civil Rights and the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life.

In 1999, Rabbi Saperstein was elected the first chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, and was recently appointed a council member of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

Rabbi Saperstein has appeared on a number of television news and talk shows, including “Crossfire,” “The O’Reilly Factor,” “Hardball,” “Nightline,” “Oprah,” “Lehrer News Hour” and CBS’s “Sunday Morning.” His articles have appeared in The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Harvard Law Review. His latest book is entitled “Jewish Dimensions of Social Justice: Tough Moral Choices of Our Time.”
