Mooney ties state-ranked CVCA; Howland edges Poland, 3-2


STRUTHERS — Goalkeeper David Perry made seven saves as the Cardinal Mooney High boys soccer team tied state-ranked Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, 0-0, on Thursday at Valley Sports.

Mooney is 5-3-2.

For CVCA (6-0-4), Nick Ciraldo made seven stops. CVCA was the 2008 state runner-up in Division II and is this week’s number-four team in a state poll of Div. III teams.

Revere 1, Boardman 0

REVERE — Colin Romisher scored the goal for the Minutemen (7-1-3), who are ranked third in this week’s state poll of Div. II teams. Goalkeeper Ryan Hoffner made two saves.

For Boardman (6-2-2), Garrett Pancake made seven saves, Angelo Pasquale made seven defensive stops and Joe Vitullo had five stops.

Poland 4, Champion 1

CHAMPION — Taylor Malaniak scored two goals while Ryan Storkel and Kevin Krumpak had one apiece for the Bulldogs. Cooper Kostelic made five saves.

For Champion, Rusty Banks scored and Brandon Brazina made seven saves.

Niles 1, Howland 1

HOWLAND — Howland’s Isaac Weisman scored off an assist from Jon Cole with 13:19 left in the game to give the Tigers (5-2-3) a tie.

Shea MacMillan scored off an assist by Justin Miler for Niles (5-3-1).

J.J. Crowley had five saves for Niles and Robert Daniels had three for Howland.

JVs: Niles, 4-1.

West Branch 1, Hubbard 0

BELOIT — Trey Williams had the game’s only goal while Cody Cress had an assist and Matt Latham saved two shots for West Branch (3-5-2).

Steve Roose made 11 saves for Hubbard.

Howland 3, Poland 2

POLAND — Howland built a 3-0 halftime lead and then had to repel a Poland comeback.

Olivia Nicholas had two goals to lead the Tigers (6-1-1, 2-0-1 All-American Conference Red Tier). Gina Albani added one goal and one assist while Shannon Martorana had one assist.

Howland goalkeeper Erika Nites had eight saves while Poland‘s Taylor Erdell made four saves.

JVs: Poland won, 1-0.

Lakeview 3, Hubbard 0

HUBBARD — Lindsey Clark, Marissa Defrancesco and Kaitlyn Tonkovich scored for the Bulldogs (7-2-2). Ali Gagne had two assists and Jen Ulam one. Goalkeeper Elaine Moldovan made two saves.

For the Eagles, Mariah Gordon made 12 saves.

SALEM — Halli Hank and Nikki Minett scored for the Quakers (7-1-1, 5-0-1 AAC White). Goalkeeper Allison Thompson made three saves.

CHAMPION — Hannah Day and Morgan White each scored two goals for the Golden Flashes (4-2-4, 2-0-2 AAC Blue). Marissa Walker and Chelsea Armstrong had the other goals while White, Jessica Craley and Taryn Hanna made assists. Goalkeepers Taylor Petersal and Angell Lipps combined for two saves.

For Liberty (0-9, 0-4), Victoria Serrano made 22 saves.

Newton Falls 2, Girard 2

NEWTON FALLS — Angela Giliano scored a goal with about seven minutes remaining to pull Newton Falls into the tie. Brooke Rodgers had the other goal while Shannon Montgomery had one assist for the Tigers (5-1-3). Newton Falls goalkeeper Rebecca Humberger had nine saves.

For Girard (1-5-3), Lisa Holmes had one goal and one assist and Ashley Minitti the other goal. Goalkeeper Mellisa Weitzman had 18 saves.

LEAVITTSBURG — Gabby Borawiec, Katelyn Downey and Julie Gibson all had unassisted goals in the second half to lift the Vikings (7-2). Kelsie Daniel made nine saves.

Emily Meals scored for South Range and Kristin Robinson made 10 saves.

BRISTOLVILLE — Erin McBride had two goals and Kelli Guarnieri the other for the Eagles (9-1-0). Jerrica Cooper had two assists and Sammie Jo Marzullo one. Helena Democopoulos made two saves.

For Bristol (5-3-1), Katlyn Rasmussen scored a goal, Jessie Pajestka had the assist and Heidi Ulrich made 32 saves.

KINSMAN — Shawna McNeely scored twice for the Braves 6-3-2 (2-0-2 Northeast Athletic Conference). Olivia Vanscoy netted the other goal. Vanscoy, Kayleen Meardith and Cara Prior had assists. Kelsey Flowers made 11 stops in net.

Nicole Virostek scored two goals for the Lakers (5-3-2, 1-1-2). Laura Copeland had a goal and an assist while goalkeeper Lauren Seman made 10 saves.
