Former Trumbull County department head admits to probation violation

WARREN — Tom Mahoney, fired in March from his job as director of the Trumbull County Department of Job and Family Services over his connection to an alleged drug dealer, admitted today he used cocaine while on probation, which is a probation violation.

His attorney, Michael Bowler of Akron, said in court that Mahoney was in a “tailspin of depression” after the firing and charges that he had possessed cocaine.

Mahoney, 55, of Oakwood Street, Girard, told Judge John M. Stuard in common pleas court that he had battled depression his whole life and that he violated his probation just after finding out that he had been turned down for a new job.

Mahoney will be sentenced to either probation or up to one year in prison when he appears before Judge Stuard on Oct. 8.
