Twenty Valley high school football teams are in the initial computer ratings.

Twenty area high school football teams are mentioned in the first computer ratings, released by the OHSAA on Tuesday.

Leading the area contingent are unbeatens Cardinal Mooney and East Palestine.

Mooney (4-0) is in first place in Division III, Region 9, while East Palestine (4-0) has the top spot in Div. V, Region 17.

Holding down No. 2 spots are Howland in Div. II, Region 5, Poland in Div. III, Region 9, Girard in Div. IV, Region 13, and Wellsville in Div. VI, Region 23. All of those teams are 4-0.

Lakeview (3-1) is third in Div. IV, Region 13, while Liberty (3-1) is No. 4.

Crestview (4-0) is No. 4 in Div. V, Region 17.

The top four teams in each region at the end of the regular season earn a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

Eight other teams are ranked 5-8.

Austintown Fitch (4-0) in Div. I, Region 1; Canfield (3-1) in Div. II, Region 5, and McDonald (4-0) in Div. VI, Region 21, are all No. 5.

Ursuline (2-2) is in sixth place in Div. V, Region 17, and Columbiana (3-1) is No. 6 in Div. VI, Region 21.

Hubbard (3-1) is No. 7 in Div. III, Region 9, while Niles (3-1) is in eighth place.

Also, Western Reserve (4-0) is No. 8 in Div. VI, Region 21.

Three more teams are in 10th place in the ratings, just out of the top eight qualifying spots.

Warren Harding (2-1-1) in Div. I, Region 1; Mineral Ridge (2-2) in Div. V, Region 17, and Warren JFK (2-2) in Div. VI, Region 21, are all in 10th place.

The ratings determine the playoff teams. Points are awarded for games won or tied, and for games won or tied by defeated or tied opponents.

The ratings will be released every Tuesday through Week 9, and on the Sunday following the end of the regular season on Oct. 31.

The playoffs begin Nov. 6-7 with the state championship games scheduled for Dec. 4-5 in Canton and Massillon.
