nfl roundup News and notes
Rams: Offensive tackle Jason Smith, the second overall pick in this year’s draft, sprained his left knee and will be listed as doubtful for Sunday’s home game against Green Bay. An MRI exam revealed the extent of the injury, which coach Steve Spagnuolo said Monday would not require surgery. Adam Goldberg finished the game at Smith’s position and would likely replace him as the starter. Center Jason Brown also has a knee sprain but Spagnuolo said Brown was day to day. Offensive lineman John Greco (wrist), a Boardman High graduate, was set to return this week after missing the first two games.
Jaguars: Receiver Troy Williamson could be done for the season because of a shoulder injury. Williamson may have torn his right labrum during Sunday’s 31-17 loss to Arizona. Coach Jack Del Rio said he didn’t have test results, but fellow receivers Mike Sims-Walker and Mike Thomas said Monday that Williamson was out for the year. Williamson, a former first-round bust in Minnesota, was the team’s biggest surprise during the preseason. He caught 12 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown, and earned a starting spot opposite Torry Holt.
Seahawks: Seattle coach Jim Mora confirmed Monday that quarterback Matt Hasselbeck has a fractured rib. The coach also says that the Seahawks have to prepare as though they won’t have Hasselbeck for Sunday’s game against the Bears. Backup Seneca Wallace would play if Seattle’s three-time Pro Bowl quarterback can’t go. Wallace finished the game on Sunday.
Raiders: Oakland right guard Robert Gallery is expected to miss four to six weeks after undergoing surgery on a broken bone in his left leg. Gallery was injured in the second half of Oakland’s 13-10 victory in Kansas City on Sunday. Coach Tom Cable says the operation was performed Monday. Cable says he has not decided who will replace Gallery. In Sunday’s game, he moved center Chris Morris to guard and used Samson Satele at center. Cable says he will look at starting Khalif Barnes, Erik Pears or Paul McQuistan at guard as well.
Eagles: Kevin Kolb will make his second straight start for Philadelphia if Donovan McNabb can’t play against Kansas City. Coach Andy Reid isn’t sure whether Jeff Garcia or Michael Vick would be the backup quarterback in that scenario. Vick is eligible to play for the first time after serving a two-game suspension as the final league penalty for his role in running a dogfighting ring. McNabb missed Sunday’s 48-22 loss to New Orleans with a cracked rib. Kolb made his first NFL start, throwing for 391 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Garcia, signed last week as insurance, was the backup.
Cowboys: Running back Marion Barber has a quadriceps injury and his return isn’t yet known. Coach Wade Phillips said Barber had an MRI on Monday, a day after he was hurt on a 35-yard run in the fourth quarter of the Cowboys’ 33-31 loss to the Giants. “We don’t know exactly where he is,” Phillips said. “Other than that, I think we came out fairly well injury-wise.” Barber gingerly walked off the field after his final run in the home opener. The hard-running Barber appeared to stumble on his own just before getting tackled at the 7, setting up Felix Jones’ touchdown run the next play. Barber had 18 carries for 124 yards with a 2-yard touchdown, the first scored in the new Cowboys Stadium.
