Mercer County NAACP banquet set for Oct. 9

WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa.— The Mercer County Unit NAACP will have its 46th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Radisson Hotel.

The theme for the evening is “Celebrating 100 Years of Bold Dreams and Victories.”

The keynote speaker for the event will be Dr. Theodore L. Yarboro Sr., a family physician in Sharon, Pa. He is a golden-heritage member of the local NAACP unit and a past chairman of the membership committee.

Yarboro received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in science from North Carolina College (now North Carolina Central University) in Durham, N.C. He earned a master of public health from the University of Pittsburgh. In 1963, he received his doctor of medicine degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn.

Yarboro came to the area in 1964 and has been active in the community. He served on the board of the Mercer Branch of the NAACP as well as other organizations. He has served on several state committees, including the Pennsylvania Viet Nam Veterans Health Initiative Commission. Yarboro helped to establish the Shenango Valley Urban League.
