college football News and notes
Oklahoma: Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford attempted to go through quarterback drills with Oklahoma on Monday as he rehabs from a sprained right shoulder. Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said after practice that Bradford “was doing more today than he’s done.” “Don’t read anything into it,” Wilson said. “There was more going on but I think as you do more, you see the next day where it is or [after] two days where it is. I think any time you come off deals, you try to push through things. Do you push and is it positive, or is there a little regression?” Bradford has missed the last two games for the No. 10 Sooners (2-1) after spraining the AC joint in his throwing shoulder just before halftime in the team’s season-opening loss to BYU. Coach Bob Stoops has said Bradford would be out two to four weeks, putting the timeframe for his return at approximately the same time as Oklahoma’s next game at ninth-ranked Miami (2-0) on Oct. 3. Jones said Bradford was doing the Sooners’ quarterback drills Monday, but that hasn’t changed the way he is practicing.
Nebraska: Quarterback Zac Lee was on the sidelines with his left thumb wrapped, but coach Bo Pelini said that wasn’t the reason Lee didn’t practice Monday. Pelini said Lee was on medication and instructed not to exert himself. The coach didn’t disclose why Lee was taking medicine. As for the thumb on Lee’s non-throwing hand being wrapped, Pelini said it was “just a little splinter.” Lee played the whole game in Saturday’s 16-15 loss at Virginia Tech, completing 11 of 30 passes for 136 yards, with two interceptions. Freshman Cody Green worked with the No. 1 offense Monday, but Pelini said Lee would be the starter this week against Louisiana-Lafayette.
Ohio State: The Buckeyes’ coaching staff selected their weekly award winners for outstanding play against Toledo. LB Ross Homan was the Buckeyes’ defensive player of the week, with six tackles and a fumble recovery. Punter Ben Buchanan, who stepped in when Jon Thoma came down with the flu, was the player of the week on special units. Wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher, with five catches for 126 yards and two scores, was the top offensive player. Cited for their work on the scout team were WR Chris Fields, LB Jordan Whiting and WR Tony Harlamert. The top player in the front seven was DL Cameron Heyward. Bryant Browning was OL of the week. No one was singled out to receive the Jack Tatum big hit of the week.
Tennessee: Coach Lane Kiffin says he put his Volunteers in the best position they could be in to beat Florida. Then he took one more shot at Gators coach Urban Meyer. Meyer said he kept his game plan conservative in No. 1 Florida’s 23-13 win after he felt the Vols didn’t appear to be playing for a win. He also said several of his players had been hit by the flu. Kiffin said he didn’t want to respond to Meyer’s comment. But when asked whether he was worried about the flu hitting Tennessee, Kiffin said “I don’t know. I guess we’ll wait and after we’re not excited about a performance, we’ll tell you everybody was sick.”
