WARREN — Home Instead Senior Care, serving Mahoning, Columbiana and Trumbull counties, is partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association in Boardman as part of Alzheimer’s Memory Walk 2009.

In Trumbull County, the walk will be Saturday at Perkins Park in Warren. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the walk begins at 9:30.

The Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. Every 70 seconds, someone in America develops Alzheimer’s disease, and an estimated 5.3 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, officials said.

Proceeds from Memory Walk 2009 support the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through advancement of research, to provide and enhance care and support for all affected and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

CPR classes in Boardman

BOARDMAN — The township fire department is working with the American Heart Association to offer CPR classes.

The classes begin Oct. 1 and will teach participants how to respond in emergencies that involve choking, heart attack and individuals who are not breathing. The fire department has qualified instructors to provide basic life-support instruction.

Each class requires advance registration and payment. At the end of the course, a card will be issued as proof of completion of the class.

The cost is $35 for both the health-care provider CPR course, which will be offered the first Wednesday of each month, and the Heartsaver CPR/automatic external defibrillator course, which will be available the third Wednesday of each month.

The sessions for first aid, which cost $35, and the first aid and CPR course, which costs $70, will be scheduled as needed.

The courses are offered at no cost to the township.

Austintown candidates

AUSTINTOWN— The Austintown Growth Foundation will sponsor a candidates night from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Oct. 8 at Austintown Middle School.

Candidates for township trustee and school board will have four minutes to speak before organizers field questions from the audience. Attendees must submit issue-based questions that each candidate for an office can answer.

The night also will feature speakers on local and statewide issues. Organizers hope to have parties from both sides of a statewide gambling issue at the event.

Underground Railroad tour set in Salem

SALEM — As part of Salem’s Heritage Days festivities, the Quakertown Trolley will return for four tours of Salem’s homes on the Underground Railroad.

The tour times are 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Oct. 3 and 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. Oct. 4.

Jeanne Martinelli, docent of the Salem Historical Society’s Freedom Hall, will dress as a Salem Quaker to help take passengers back to the year 1856.

The homes are private, and entrance is not possible.

More than 100 slides will be flashed on a screen inside the trolley to show the insides of the homes, the Underground Railroad hiding places and several abolitionists who lived in or visited them.

The slides also will help clarify the historical information presented during the program.

Each tour will last about one hour. Cost is $10 per person.
