COLLEGE FOOTBALL Roundup \ Saturday’s late games

MISSOURI VALLEY CONFERENCE

S. Dakota St. 41, Indiana St. 0

BROOKINGS, S.D. — Ryan Crawford went 21 of 27 and threw for 239 yards to lead South Dakota State to a shutout in the first conference game of the season. Crawford connected for a touchdown in each half and accounted for almost all of the Jackrabbits’ passing yards while South Dakota State (2-0, 1-0 Missouri Valley) dominated the Sycamores (0-4, 0-1) on almost every front. Kyle Minett rushed for one touchdown and caught a Crawford pass for another. He also ran for 95 yards.

Illinois State 38, Austin Peay 7

NORMAL, Ill. — Cliffton Gordon ran for four touchdowns for Illinois State. Illinois State finished with 367 total yards to 109 for the Governors (1-2).

North Dakota State 59, Wagner 28

FARGO, N.D. — Pat Paschall rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns to lead North Dakota State. Paschall, the nation’s top rusher in the Football Championship Subdivision, scored on a 91-yard run in the second quarter, which included a spinning leap over a Wagner defensive player.

AREA COLLEGES

Washington & Jefferson 56, Thiel 16

WASHINGTON, Pa. — W&J outgained Thiel 537 yards to 231 and earned 27 first downs to Thiel’s 10 in front of 2,444 at Cameron Stadium in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener. Sophomore running back Ross Gargano (Sharon, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) scored Thiel’s first rushing touchdown of the season. Kicker John Madeline (Hubbard) closed out the Thiel scoring in the third quarter with a 44-yard field goal.

Grove City 35, Bethany 14

BETHANY, W. Va. — Grove City’s offense amassed 447 total yards and 28 first downs while the Wolverine defense intercepted four passes in the PAC opener at Bison Stadium. Grove City (1-2, 1-0 PAC) jumped out to a 21-0 lead by halftime before sealing the win in the second half.

MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE

Western Michigan 48, Miami 26

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Tim Hiller threw four touchdown passes and Jamail Berry returned a fumble for a score seven seconds into the game for Western Michigan. The Broncos (1-2, 1-0 Mid-American), who scored the game’s first 35 points, capitalized on five turnovers by the RedHawks (0-3, 0-1) while extending their home winning streak to seven.

Ohio 28, Cal Poly 10

ATHENS — Theo Scott threw for a career-high 236 yards and three touchdown passes to lead Ohio.

Marshall 17, Bowling Green 10

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. — Darius Marshall rushed for 186 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown run, to lead Marshall. The Thundering Herd (2-1) trailed 7-0 at halftime after Bowling Green’s Chris Wright caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Sheehan, who completed 43-of-62 passes for 383 yards.

But Marshall answered with 17 straight points and never fell behind again.

BIG TEN

Syracuse 37, Northwestern 34

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Ryan Lichtenstein kicked a 40-yard field goal on the final play of the game. Max Suter set up the winning points with an interception of Mike Kafka, returning it to the Wildcats 39.

TOP 25

No. 2 Texas 34, Texas Tech 24

AUSTIN, Texas — Colt McCoy threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Dan Buckner in the fourth quarter to give the Longhorns some room to work and Texas gained a measure of revenge against the Red Raiders. McCoy’s 3-yard TD to Buckner with nine minutes left put Texas ahead 31-17, but it was an otherwise shaky outing for last season’s runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. McCoy finished with 205 yards and two interceptions on 24-of-34 passing for the Longhorns (3-0, 1-0 Big 12).

No. 5 Mississippi 52, SE Louisiana 6

OXFORD, Miss. — Jevan Snead threw three touchdowns, Brandon Bolden rushed for 105 yards and freshman linebacker D.T. Shackleford returned in interception for a touchdown for Ole Miss. The Rebels (2-0) won their eighth straight game — their longest winning streak since they won 10 in 1971-72. But the offense and special teams needed plenty of help from Shackelford and the defense to erase several mistakes against an FCS opponent.

Florida State 54, No. 7 BYU 28

PROVO, Utah — Christian Ponder threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Florida State ended the Cougars’ 18-game home winning streak and probably any hopes they had of a BCS berth. Florida State (2-1) was too fast for the BYU (2-1) and avoided its first 1-2 start in 20 years.

No. 9 LSU 31, La-Lafayette 3

BATON ROUGE, La. — Chad Jones two interceptions, leading a dominant defensive performance by LSU. Jones also was a relief pitcher on LSU’s 2009 national champion baseball team, but if he’s to play for his second national title in football, LSU’s offense may need improvement. The Tigers (3-0) were hampered by sloppiness as Jordan Jefferson again struggled to complete deep passes and instead threw his first interception of the season.

No. 15 TCU 56, Texas State 21

FORT WORTH, Texas — Joseph Turner ran for 129 yards and three touchdowns, Jerry Hughes had three sacks and TCU won its eighth consecutive home opener. Mistakes by the Horned Frogs (2-0) allowed their Football Championship Subdivision opponent to stay close early — giving coach Gary Patterson plenty of teaching points before going to Clemson next weekend.

No. 16 Oklahoma State 41, Rice 24

STILLWATER, Okla. — Zac Robinson rushed for one touchdown and threw for two to Dez Bryant as Oklahoma State rebounded from its first loss. While Oklahoma State (2-1) didn’t exactly get its offense rolling, the Cowboys did enough to beat Rice (0-3), which has opened the season with three straight road games, two against Big 12 Conference foes.

Against a defense that entered the game last among 120 Football Bowl Subdivision teams against the pass, Robinson completed 14 of 20 passes for 227 yards while Bryant had nine catches for 161 yards, including touchdown grabs of 23 and 10 yards.

No. 22 Kansas 44, Duke 16

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Todd Reesing threw three touchdown passes and Maxwell Onyegbule returned an interception 48 yards for another score, giving the Jayhawks their 25th victory in the last 29 home games. A surprised Kansas (3-0) found itself trailing 7-0 after Thad Lewis engineered a two-play, 87-yard drive on Duke’s first possession. The 22-point underdog Blue Devils (1-2) kept it tied 7-all into the second quarter before Reesing began finding his touch. The senior finished 28 of 41 for 338 yards, the 14th 300-yard day of his career.

No. 23 Georgia 52, Arkansas 41

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Joe Cox threw for 375 yards and tied a school record with five touchdown passes as Georgia pulled away for a wild win.
