mid-American conference roundup Saturday’s games
Indiana 38, Akron 21
AKRON — Ben Chappell threw two touchdown passes and Ray Fisher returned the opening kickoff 91 yards for a score in Indiana’s victory. Akron (1-2) played without starting quarterback Chris Jacquemain, who was suspended indefinitely on Friday for a violation of team rules. Sophomore Matt Rodgers started, but without Jacquemain, a three-year starter, the Zips struggled moving the ball. Safety Austin Thomas had two of Indiana’s four interceptions and the Hoosiers held the Zips to 271 yards of total offense. The Hoosiers are 3-0 for the third time in the past five years. Indiana scored three touchdowns in the second half and could have scored much more, but Akron’s defense and special teams did its best to make up for the offensive woes. Indiana turned the ball over twice in Akron territory and had a field goal and punt blocked. With hometown hero LeBron James looking on from the Akron sideline, the Zips took a 14-10 lead in the second quarter when Jalil Carter blocked Chris Hagerup’s punt at the 26 and Aaron Williams watched the ball sail into the end zone before falling on it for the touchdown. Akron didn’t score again until the game’s final minute. Chappell marched Indiana 77 yards in 12 plays on the ensuing drive, and his 10-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell Evans in the final minute of the half gave Indiana a 17-14 lead. Chappell added a touchdown pass to Max Dedmond in the third quarter before running backs Trea Burgess and Darius Willis both scored in the fourth. Chappell was 18 of 28 for 163 yards and an interception. Indiana rotated three tailbacks in totaling 180 yards on the ground.
Iowa State 34, Kent State 14
KENT — Austen Arnaud ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, helping Iowa State break its 17-game road losing streak. The victory was the Cyclones’ first road win since defeating Texas A&M 42-14 in 2005. Alexander Robinson scored on a 15-yard run in the third quarter, and rushed for 143 yards on 23 carries for the fifth 100-yard rushing game of his career. Arnaud, who threw four interceptions and was benched in last week’s loss to Boston College, was 13-for-21 for 144 yards. He also ran for 42 yards on nine carries. Trailing 7-3 in the first quarter, Iowa State (2-1) scored two touchdowns in a span of 2:02 to pull away from the Golden Flashes (1-2).
Central Michigan 48, Alcorn State 0
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Carl Volny rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns.
