DOCTORATE

Counselor earns degree

Jamie Marich of Howland recently received her doctorate in human services with a specialization in counseling studies from Capella University, an online institution based in Minneapolis.

Marich is a 1997 graduate of Chaney High School and 2000 graduate of Youngstown State University. She has been a practicing counselor in the area since 2004, and she is currently employed by PsyCare Inc.

She is a counselor at the company’s Liberty office, where she offers specialized services in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder and addiction.

Marich completed her dissertation on the use of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — cutting-edge treatment of females struggling with addiction.

Her work in this area has garnered publication in several peer- reviewed and popular sources, and she recently presented her dissertation research at the EMDR International Association’s annual meeting in Atlanta.

Marich also is an independent consultant, online instructor and a speech coach at Howland High School.

SCOUTS

Received Eagle award

Codee A. Riddick received his Eagle Scout Award at a court of honor ceremony earlier this month at Boardman United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

He has been a member of Troop 46 for seven years and has earned 31 merit badges. His scoutmaster is Eric Grabman.

His Eagle Scout leadership project was planning, building and placement of a nature stop on the hiking trail in Boardman Park. It consists of benches, information and flying-squirrel houses.

Codee is a senior at Boardman High School and is a tuba player in the marching band. He also is a member of St. Charles Church. He plans to join the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation.

He is the son of Bill and Melissa Riddick of Boardman.

LEADERSHIP

Elected recording secretary

Sue Baker was elected recording secretary of the International Chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization Sisterhood at the organization’s biennial convention in San Diego earlier this month.

Baker, a native of Wooster, lives in Warren with her husband, Chuck.

A member of the PEO Sisterhood since 1979, she served as president of the Ohio State Chapter in 2004 and has served on the International Peace Scholarship board of trustees for the past four years.

A graduate of Ohio State University, Baker was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and went on to work as a registered nurse and registered vascular technologist, specializing in cardiac and vascular nursing.

PEO was founded in 1869 at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. With executive offices now in Des Moines, Iowa, it has almost 250,000 members in nearly 6,000 local chapters in the United States and Canada.

One of the oldest organizations for women, PEO’s mission is to promote higher educational opportunities. To date, it has awarded almost $190 million in financial assistance to more than 80,000 women in the form of grants, loans, awards and scholarships.
