Mount Union 30, Ohio Northern 10

ADA — Top-ranked Mount Union College used its defense to keep No. 7-ranked Ohio Northern University in check during an Ohio Athletic Conference win at Dial-Roberson Stadium. The Purple Raiders surrendered just 80 yards of total offense to the Polar Bears and won their 91st consecutive regular-season road game dating to 1991. Linebacker Judd Lutz had a team-best eight stops for a unit that had four sacks and an interception. The first half featured some rare territory for Mount Union. They trailed for the first time in a regular season game since a 21-14 loss to Ohio Northern in 2005. They were held scoreless in the first quarter for the first time since 2006. Mount Union won that game 14-0 against Baldwin-Wallace. The Purple Raiders (2-0, 1-0) turned the ball over twice in the first — both on interceptions — but Northern was only able to convert the miscues into just three points. Ohio Northern (1-1, 0-1) led 3-0 after the first quarter. Mount Union ended the scoreless drought on a four-yard run by Cecil Shorts III with 12:32 left before halftime. The Purple Raiders took a 10-3 lead following Jay Carpenter’s 28-yard field goal a little more than four minutes later. It was a short-lived lead. Ohio Northern’s J.J. Mihoci returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards to tie the game. Mount Union recaptured the lead on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Kurt Rocco to Kyle Miller with 4:57 left in the third. The Purple Raiders increased the lead to 24-10 after Scott Panchik scored on a 6-yard touchdown run with 12:49 left in the game. Panchik led all rushers with 145 yards and recorded his first career 100-yard game.

Westminster 27, Saint Vincent 14

LATROBE, Pa. — Westminster picked up its first win of the season by snapping a nine-game road losing streak. Westminster senior tailback Nick McKolosky posted a career high in rush attempts as he toted the ball 31 times for 121 yards and one touchdown. Three of McKolosky’s nine career 100-yard rushing games have come against Saint Vincent. McKolosky’s 1-yard touchdown run capped off a 13-play, 72-yard march on the Titans’ opening drive of the game. McKolosky also caught three passes for 26 yards and a 13-yard touchdown in the second quarter that gave Westminster a 17-7 lead. The Titans (1-2) outgained Saint Vincent (0-3) by a 317-225 margin, including 150 rushing yards on 44 attempts and 167 passing yards on 21 throws. Westminster senior quarterback Kevin Franz completed 15 of 19 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns, including the one to McKolosky and a second the senior receiver Jon Gubish from 36 yards out to make the score 27-7 in the third quarter. The Titans’ other six points came off the foot of sophomore kicker Trevor Young, who connected on a 42-yarder to make it 10-7 in the first quarter and a 21-yarder to put the Titans up 20-7 in the third quarter.

Kenyon 45, Hiram 27

HIRAM — Freshman wide receiver Kyle Callari had game-highs of 11 catches for 160 yards and a touchdown, but it would not be enough for the Terriers in a high-scoring game and North Coast Athletic Conference opener at the Charles A. Henry Field. The Terriers are 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the NCAC. The Lords improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 NCAC. In the first quarter, Kenyon got off to a quick start with a 51-yard opening kickoff return by Charles Small which later led to an eight-yard touchdown run by Brett Williams that gave the Lords an early 7-0 lead. But Hiram responded as junior running back Luke Lewis returned the favor with a 43-yard return of his own on the ensuing kickoff, setting up the Terriers in Kenyon territory. The drive later ended in a 14-yard TD completion from freshman quarterback Brendan Rehor to junior wide receiver Glenn Campbell that capped an 11-play, 48-yard drive to even the score at 7-7 with 8:49 left in the quarter. Following another sizeable return by Small (36 yards), Kenyon found the end zone again on its second possession of the game with Kyle Toot scoring from three yards out. It would be one of four total touchdowns for Toot in the game (three rushing and one receiving). The Terriers continued the seesaw battle on their next possession when sophomore tailback Rodney Jacobs scampered 38 yards, his longest rush of the day, to end the scoring and tie the game at 14-14 after the first quarter of play. Hiram took the lead on its first drive of the second half on an end-around play by senior Matt Wilson.
