Police ID 2 men found shot to death

STAFF REPORT

YOUNGSTOWN — Police have identified two men who were found shot to death on the city’s South Side, but they are still looking for those responsible for the crime.

Police identified Keith Stanford, 39, of West LaClede Avenue, and David Hammond, 39, of West Evergreen Avenue, as the two men found shot to death in a car on Glenwood Avenue.

Police were called to the 2200 block of Glenwood Avenue just before midnight Tuesday by a 20-year-old South Side man riding a bicycle in the area. Officers found two black men in the front seat of a 1989 gray Oldsmobile sitting in large pools of blood and not showing any signs of life.

According to reports, the car’s engine was still running when officers arrived at the scene. The car also was in drive with the deceased driver’s foot on the brake.

The 20-year-old witness told police he was coming from a nearby convenience store when he heard about seven gunshots and saw the Oldsmobile coast to a stop.

Stanford is the listed owner of the Oldsmobile in which the men were found.

If the Mahoning County coroner rules the deaths as homicides, they would be the 20th and 21st recorded in the city this year. The last homicide occurred Sept. 5 on the city’s South Side. The city had 23 homicides at this time last year.
