YOUNGSTOWN — The fire at Banner Supply Co. on the city’s South Side took about 29 hours to be fully extinguished and caused about $3 million in damage, Fire Chief John J. O’Neill Jr. said.

The fire wasn’t out until about noon Wednesday. The fire to the East Indianola Avenue building was reported around 7 a.m. Tuesday.

The fire apparently started in the northwest corner of a 24,000-square-foot storage unit near the main building, O’Neill said.

The black smoke coming from the business could be seen for miles.

The cause remains under investigation but is not considered suspicious, O’Neill said.

At the height of the fire, the department had about 28 firefighters and nine trucks at the scene, spraying water from various directions with aerial trucks.

O’Neill said there were no injuries.
