Woman tells police she’s not with con man

STAFF REPORT

BOARDMAN — A woman who was believed to be traveling with a suspected con artist who preys on the elderly has called police to report she is not with him.

Boardman Detective Greg Stepuk said Carrie Chalfant called Tuesday to say she is not with Steven Kuhn Jr., 41, who is being sought in four cases of theft from elderly people in the township this month.

He is charged with felonies in those cases because the victims are older than age 65, Stepuk said. Kuhn also is charged with a misdemeanor count of theft by deception because one of the victims was under 65.

Police believe Kuhn is the man who’s been knocking on elderly people’s doors and asking for money.

The man pretends to be a neighbor who has run out of gas or is having car trouble, Stepuk said.

Struthers police also are looking for Kuhn, who has no known address.

He is believed to be traveling in a 1995 dark-green Volvo station wagon that was taken from an acquaintance of his in Ashtabula, Stepuk said.

If you believe you have seen him, you are asked to call Boardman police at (330) 726-4144.
