Suspect beaten by alleged victim

YOUNGSTOWN — A city man was hoping to steal from a South Side couple, but instead ended up beaten by his intended victim and thrown in the Mahoning County jail.

Richard King, 23, of Maywood Avenue, appeared today for video arraignment from the jail before Judge Elizabeth Kobly Youngstown Municipal Court on aggravated burglary charges. His bond has been set at $75,000.

According to police, King went to a home in the 500 block of West Judson early Monday morning, broke a window, unlocked the front door and came into the home. The breaking glass and barking dog awakened the male and female couple living in the home.

The male resident told police he went to check on the dog and noise when he saw a shadowy figure, later determined to be King, standing in the living room. King, reports said, was standing in the living room with a large rock raised above his head and began coming toward the man.

King tried to strike him, but the man was able to punch King in the forehead, leaving a cut above King’s right eye. The resident then “took King to the floor” before picking him up and forcing him out the front door of the house, according to police reports.

When police arrived they found King standing in the front yard after he had just been tossed out of the house. He was arrested.

The male resident did have an injury to the fingers on his left hand, according to the reports.
