Rendell, lawmakers to review budget proposal

HARRISBURG — Gov. Ed Rendell summoned high-ranking state lawmakers to his official residence in Harrisburg on Sunday night to address his criticisms of a tentative $28 billion state budget deal that he has threatened to veto.

The meeting comes two days after three of the Capitol’s four caucuses announced an agreement in principle to end a 21‚Ñ2-month-old budget impasse. But Rendell and House Republicans have announced their opposition, raising doubts about whether the plan will be enacted without revisions.

House Republicans consider the overall spending level to be too high and oppose the higher taxes it entails.

Body found in pickup

CALIFORNIA — Authorities in western Pennsylvania say divers searching for a car that had slipped into the Monongahela River came across a pickup truck containing a badly decomposed body.

Police in Washington County say the car belonging to a California University of Pennsylvania student taking water samples veered into the river Saturday morning.

The dive team found the car, but they also found the truck containing the body. Officials say they cannot tell the race or sex of the person inside because of the condition of the remains, but they believe the truck may have been there for four years.
