Big ten roundup \ Saturday’s other games
Central Michigan 29, Michigan State 27
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Central Michigan quarterback Dan LeFevour became the Mid-American Conference’s all-time leader in total offense and led the Chippewas to a stunning, come-from-behind win. Andrew Aguila made a 42-yard field goal for the Chippewas (1-1) with 3 seconds to play for the winning points. LeFevour threw an 11-yard TD pass to Paris Cotton with 32 seconds left to pull Central within 27-26. On the 2-point attempt, Antonio Brown caught LeFevour’s high-arching pass, but he was out of the end zone. The Chippewas then recovered an onside kick and drove into position for a 47-yard field goal, which Aguila missed. But Michigan State (1-1) was whistled for offsides, giving Aguila another chance. LeFevour, a senior, passed Byron Leftwich’s record of 12,084 yards during the game.
Wisconsin 34, Fresno St 31 2OT
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin safety Chris Maragos came up with an interception in the second overtime, and Philip Welch kicked a 22-yard field goal to lift the Badgers. It was an ideal end to a rough week for Wisconsin, which was able to field its starters despite an outbreak of flulike symptoms that spread through the team. Scott Tolzien threw a 6-yard touchdown to Nick Toon to take the lead on the Badgers’ first overtime possession. But Fresno State quarterback Ryan Colburn hit Seyi Ajirotutu in the back of the end zone to force a second overtime. Maragos then picked off Colburn in the end zone, and the Badgers drove for the decisive field goal.
Indiana 23, Western Michigan 19
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Demetrius McCray had a career-high 134 yards rushing including a 59-yard TD run, and Indiana’s defense forced a late turnover to preserve a victory. The Hoosiers (2-0) had a chance to put the game away midway through the fourth. Facing fourth-and-a foot from the Western 6, the Hoosiers decided to kick a 21-yard field goal that would have given them a 9-point lead.
Iowa 35, Iowa State 3
AMES, Iowa — Ricky Stanzi threw a career-high four touchdown passes and Iowa forced six turnovers in beating Iowa State, the Hawkeyes’ first victory on their rivals’ field in six years. Iowa, which fell out of the Top 25 after squeezing out a 17-16 victory over Northern Iowa a week ago, had a much easier time in what’s annually the state’s biggest athletic event. Tyler Sash tied a school record by making three of Iowa’s five interceptions, and the Hawkeyes (2-0) also recovered a fumble. Stanzi and the offense converted four of those turnovers into touchdowns.
Minnesota 20, Air Force 13
MINNEAPOLIS — Nate Triplett christened Minnesota’s new stadium with a career-high 17 tackles and a 52-yard fumble return for a score to carry the Gophers. Eric Decker had 10 catches for 113 yards for Minnesota (2-0), which celebrated its return to campus with the opening of the $300 million TCF Bank Stadium.
Illinois 45, Illinois State 17
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Backup quarterback Eddie McGee replaced an injured Juice Williams and led Illinois. Williams left the game after the Illini’s first series. The senior injured his right quadriceps on a 49-yard run to the Redbirds’ 1-yard line. Illinois officials said Williams was healthy enough to return, but with the Illini up 24-0 at the break, he didn’t.
Northwestern 27, Eastern Michigan 24
EVANSTON, Ill. — Stefan Demos kicked a 49-yard field goal in the closing seconds, and Northwestern escaped after blowing a 21-point lead. Eastern Michigan had just tied it on a 3-yard run by Terrence Blevins with 2:40 remaining, but instead of an upset, the Wildcats (2-0) prevailed.
