“MTV Video Music Awards” (9 p.m., MTV): Edgy host Russell Brand is sure to cause a stir at the “2009 MTV Video Music Awards.” But we’re more interested in the stellar lineup of performers, including Beyonc , Green Day, Jay-Z and Lady Gaga.

“True Blood” (9 p.m., HBO): Sex, shocks and Sookie. The outrageously delicious second season of “True Blood” had it all. Now it’s time to sign off for the summer, but not before a wild finale in Bon Temps.
