‘Black Cat,’ ‘Block 5’ coming to Main Street
COLUMBIANA — Two Youngstown theatrical productions will go on the road for performances at Main Street Theater this fall and winter. “Edgar Allan Poe’s The Black Cat” will be presented at 8 p.m. Nov. 6 and 7, and 2 p.m. Nov. 8. The theater is at 5 N. Main St., on the circle in downtown Columbiana.
The new, full-length adaptation of the Poe tale was adapted by Youngstown-based playwright/director J.E.Ballantyne Jr. It will premiere at the Victorian Players Theater in Youngstown on Oct. 16, where it will run for three weekends.
A revival of “Block 5” will open at Main Street Theater at 8 p.m. Feb. 5, with additional shows at 8 p.m. Feb. 6 and 2 p.m. Feb. 7.
The production is a revival of the original “Block 5,” written by Ballantyne, which premiered in 2005 at the Oakland Center for the Arts in Youngstown. “Block 5” is based on actual events that took place at the Mauthausen Concentration Camp in Austria during World War II. Before coming to Main Street, “Block 5” will be presented at Victorian Players Theater for three weekends beginning Jan. 15.

Kent-Trumbull presents modern morality play
CHAMPION — Kent Trumbull Theatre will present “For Every Man, Woman and Child — a modern morality play inspired by EVERYMAN,” Sept. 25-27 and Oct. 2-4. The play, written by Willy Conley, tells the tale of how the gods/goddesses of various world religions send Death to prepare “Everyone” for the afterlife. Adapted from the medieval Christian play “Everyman,” it will be performed with American Sign Language accompaniment. A special fund-raiser performance will be at 3 p.m. Sept. 26. Proceeds will be used to offset the travel costs of the cast and crew for a performance at the 24th International Conference on Medievalism at Sienna College. An Ohio Deaf Leaders forum will begin after the show, and the author will be available to sign copies of his new anthology.
Dance club to mark Ballroom Week at mall
NILES — National Ballroom week will be celebrated Saturday at Eastwood Mall by the Youngstown-Warren Chapter of USA Dance. A number of dances, including waltz, foxtrot, quickstep, Viennese waltz, swing, cha-cha, rumba, mambo, salsa and hustle will be demonstrated. The event will be between noon and 5 p.m. in the main concourse, next to the Aquarium. USA Dance will sponsor a free night of lessons and dancing at 5 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Orthodox Center, 1025 Belle Vista Ave., Youngstown.
Moscow Ballet plans ‘Nutcracker’ auditions
YOUNGSTOWN — Moscow Ballet will have an open audition for “The Great Russian Nutcracker” at 2 p.m. Oct. 4 at Kathi’s Dance and Gym Center, 10825 Springfield Road, Poland. Applicants must have dance experience and be between 7 and 16 years old. Applicants must also dress in dance attire and may bring Pointe shoes.
