Youngstown woman accused of threatening police officer

Staff Report

YOUNGSTOWN — A city woman is in Mahoning County jail on more than $50,000 bond accused of retaliation threats against a Youngstown police officer.

Sharon Moreland, 42, of Idlewood Avenue, is charged with one count of retaliation and one count of drug abuse (marijuana).

According to police, officers were arresting Moreland’s 27-year-old son Joseph Moreland on outstanding warrants Thursday when Sharon Moreland pulled alongside the car in which her son was being transported and told her son to get hold of Officer Phil Chance and let him know that he would be dealt with the next day.

Vindicator files show Joseph Moreland was arrested earlier this week after a chase and brief altercation with Chance in which Chance’s hand was slammed in a door. He was arraigned and put on an $80,000 bond in the earlier case. His bond is set at $525,000 for the more recent warrants of felonious assault and falsification.

The Idlewood Avenue address listed as Sharon Moreland’s home is the same address of the altercation between Joseph Moreland and Chance.

Officers arrested Sharon Moreland at the Idlewood Avenue address. Police say they found a small amount of marijuana on Sharon Moreland before her arrest.

Reports say Chance had been receiving multiple calls and threats in the 12 hours before Sharon Moreland’s arrest. Police say Sharon Moreland’s cell phone number was found in Chance’s caller identification files about seven times.

Police also said Sharon Moreland told officers transporting her to the jail that she would have told Chance herself if he would have answered the phone.

Reports do not say how Sharon Moreland gained access to Chance’s cell phone number.

Sharon Moreland is due back in court Tuesday.
