Fire district forgoes land sale to Lowellville schools
STAFF REPORT
POLAND — The Western Reserve Joint Fire District decided Wednesday that it will not sell a parcel in Poland Township to the Lowellville School District.
The fire board acquired the land at the intersection of Hubbard and New Castle roads earlier this summer and likely will hold onto it for the next couple of years while it works out plans to expand the station and add a police substation, said Chief David “Chip” Comstock.
The school district wanted to acquire the land to build a school in the future.
Comstock said that it likely would be years before the district would expand its station onto the parcel and that repairs to current stations are of higher priority now.
The chief dispelled the idea that the district would build a training station on the land. He said the district has made arrangements with Republic Services Inc. for the future use of 10 to 15 acres of land for a training station.
The district covers Poland village and township.
