Cardinal Mooney tops Elyria Cath.


ELYRIA — Senior Braylon Heard carried eight times for 182 yards and three touchdowns as Cardinal Mooney (3-0) rolled past Elyria Catholic 49-20 Friday night.

Heard, a West Virginia recruit, scored on runs of 62, 13 and 41 yards — all in the first half as the Cardinals built a 28-12 lead.

Clarence Scott, Ray Vinopal and Karrington Griffin all added rushing touchdowns for the Cardinals, while John Stoops recovered an Ed Reese fumble in the end zone for Mooney’s final score.

The Cardinals rolled up 291 yards on the ground and held Elyria Catholic to just 140 yards rushing. Scott and Nick Hargate each had an interception for the Cardinals.

Mentor Lake Catholic 35, Ursuline 21

MENTOR — Allen Jones rushed 34 times for 191 yards and three TDs to lead Ursuline (1-2), which dropped its second straight contest.

Paul Kempe completed 10 of 19 passes for 104 yards and two interceptions. Chris Collins caught five passes for 71 yards.

Richie Sanders scored four touchdowns to lead Lake Catholic (3-0), which took a 14-0 lead.

The Irish cut the deficit to seven (28-21) on Jones’ final TD run with 2:19 left in the third quarter. But Sanders scored his final TD with 6:13 left to seal the victory.

Boardman 52, Chaney 6

BOARDMAN — Nick Buonavalonta rushed 12 times for 86 yards and scored two TDs to lead Boardman, which rolled up 200 yards on the ground.

Rob Boyd completed 8 of 15 passes for 126 yards for the Spartans (2-1), who have won two straight.

Carmen Tarantino returned an interception 45 yards for a TD and also made a tackle in the end zone for one of two Boardman safeties. Delaney Son added an 8-yard blocked punt return for a touchdown, Tray Robinson had a 19-yard TD run and made the tackle on the other safety and Trevor Ragan made two field goals.

Chaney had just 14 total yards, all on the ground. Tyler Thompson scored the Cowboy’s lone TD on a 29-yard fumble return.

Fitch 55, Painesville Riverside 7

AUSTINTOWN — Bruce Reed opened the scoring with a 27-yard run barely two minutes into the game and finished with 183 yards on 12 carries and two scores for the Falcons (3-0).

Jon Ballard added 70 yards passing on 9-of-19, throwing for two scores. He rushed for 80 yards and a TD.

Fitch gained 417 yards rushing and had 495 total.

DeAndre Richardson caught one of Ballard’s scoring tosses and he returned a kickoff 90 yards for a score late in the first half, as the Falcons opened a 48-7 lead at halftime.

East 28, Beaver Local 14

LISBON — East junior Shawn Haywood completed 14 of 20 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown to help lead the Panthers (1-2).

Brandon Mosley caught an 87-yard touchdown pass and Trumaine Jenkins returned a kickoff 97 yards for a TD.

Stephen Johnson rushed nine times for 39 yards and a TD. Lilton Morris led the Panthers with 10 carries for 68 yards and Devonta Fleeton had eight carries for 38 yards.

Beaver Local QB Evan Schneider had a 3-yard TD run and also threw for a score, a 28-yarder to Jake Lunders.

Mohawk 21,| New Brighton 15 (OT)

NEW BRIGHTON, Pa. — Johnny Beatty ran for one touchdown and passed for two more to lead Mohawk (1-1).

Beatty’s two-yard run in overtime decided the contest. He also had touchdown passes of 15 yards to Justin Upham and 41 yards to Matt Vogel, which set up the overtime period.

New Brighton (0-2) scored all 15 points in the second quarter, one on an 89-yard kickoff return by Mike Florente.
