AAC: Poland, Howland, Hubbard, Niles, Salem and Champion win; Brookfield and LaBrae fall


POLAND — Junior wide receiver Darius Patton and senior tailback Luke Wollet combined for over 400 yards as Poland christened its renovated stadium with a 41-7 victory over St. Thomas More of Hamilton, Ontario, on Friday night.

Patton went 70 yards for a TD on a pass play from Colin Reardon and Patton returned a blocked field goal 92 yards for a TD.

Wollet ran distances of 64 yards and 10 yards for touchdowns, while E.J. Kosek scored from 5 yards out.

Nick Heltzel, a senior fullback, also had a 10-yard TD run for Poland (3-0). Kyle Filicky kicked five extra points.

Howland 58, St. John De Brebeuf 0

HOWLAND — Mike Mangiarelli rushed seven times for 148 yards and scored five touchdowns for the Tigers (3-0).

Mangiarelli scored on runs of 49, 10, 54 and 18 yards as Howland took a 37-0 lead at the break.

He then returned the second-half kickoff 82 yards for a 44-0 advantage.

Howland also got scoring runs from Brandon Nieland and Tony Osborn that covered 6 and 8 yards and Zach Wilson brought an interception back for a 35-yard score.

Chris McClearn was 8-for-8 on conversion kicks.

Hubbard 43, Southeast 7

RAVENNA — Andre Givens rushed 23 times for 193 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns, and Danny Duvall scored twice for the Eagles (2-1).

Duvall caught a 25-yard pass from Matt Shelton to open the scoring, and Givens added 3- and 54-yard scoring runs in the first half as Hubbard opened a 29-0 lead.

Kurtis Drummond also scored in the first half on a 27-yard pass from Shelton, who scored on a 14-yard run in the third quarter.

Noah Kainrad was 12 of 15 passing for 112 yards and a touchdown for Southeast (0-3).

Niles 14, Coventry 12

NILES — Blake Robinson’s 15-yard touchdown run with 7:59 remaining brought the Red Dragons back from a 12-0 deficit.

Robinson rushed 20 times for 76 yards to lead Niles (2-1), which also got a 7-yard scoring pass from Zack Bailey to Joe Moss with 31 seconds left in the first half, cutting Coventry’s lead to 12-8.

Niles was outgained 177-143.

Coventry’s Randy Henline rushed 43 times for 164 yards and scored the first touchdown of the game, a 1-yard run. David Bulgrin ran in from 6 yards to give Coventry a 12-0 lead in the second quarter.

Salem 28, West Branch 26

BELOIT — Ben Eisel ran for one touchdown, caught a pass for a second and returned a punt for a third and Salem held off a late rally by West Branch.

Eisel ran 25 yards for one score, caught a 60 yard pass from Trent Toothman for another then returned a punt 49 yards as the Quakers built a 28-13 lead. West Branch behind Mark Smith, who rushed for 176 yards and two TDs, scored 13 points in the final quarter.

Jefferson Area 20, Brookfield 14

BROOKFIELD — Colin Cicon threw his third touchdown pass of the night, a 35-yarder to Matt Moyer with 1:39 remaining, as Jefferson broke a 14-14 tie.

Cicon was 9 of 15 for 140 yards and three scores. He connected with Moyer on a 19-yard scoring toss and a 16-yarder to Brian Rosenburg in the second quarter.

Moyer caught three passes for 74 yards.

Brookfield (0-3) got two touchdowns from Vince Vinzeio, one a 44-yard run in the first quarter and a 7-yard pass from Jeremy Quinlan with four seconds left in the first half. Quinlan rushed for 53 yards on 11 carries and completed 7 of 13 passes for 76 yards.

Vinzeio caught three passes for 46 yards and rushed three times for 44 yards.

CVCA 6, LaBrae 0

CLEVELAND — An 11-yard touchdown run in the third quarter accounted for the game’s only score as LaBrae fell to 1-2.

Matt Szorady rushed 31 times for 112 yards for the Vikings, while Andrew Sakela completed seven of 15 passes for 39 yards. Sakela was intercepted once.

LaBrae also lost two fumbles and the Vikings were penalized 10 times for 90 yards.

Newton Falls 35, Windham 6

WINDHAM — Eric Kline scored three touchdowns, two on passes from Matt Brazin for Newton Falls.

Kline caught passes of 18 and 20 yards and ran 51 yards for his third score, while Kyle Clonch also caught a scoring pass from Brazin, who was 9-of-13 for 166 yards.

Champion 12, Conneaut 0

CONNEAUT — Jay Sankey kicked two field goals and Nathan Vesey ran for the game’s only touchdown as Champion blanked Conneaut.

Sanky’s boots were from 28 and 34 yards, while Vesey ran eight yards for the touchdown. The Flashes held Conneaut to six rushing yards.
