Urban League reschedules dinner

Chicago’s Urban League president will spend an entire day in the Mahoning Valley.

NILES — The keynote speaker’s campaign for the U.S. Senate seat once held by President Barack Obama has resulted in rescheduling of The Greater Warren-Youngstown Urban League’s 79th Anniversary Dinner.

The event, previously scheduled for next Thursday at McMenamy’s in Niles, will now be Oct. 22 at the same location in order to accommodate keynote speaker Cheryle Robinson Jackson’s campaign schedule.

Jackson, president of the innovative Chicago Urban League and leading candidate to succeed President Obama in the Senate, worked with The Greater Warren-Youngstown Urban League’s President Tom Conley to set the new date.

“Cheryle agreed to present our keynote address before she formally entered the Senate race,” Conley said. “Since then her candidacy has constantly gained momentum and she’s been forced to adjust her schedule almost daily. Everyone at the Urban League understands how important this race is, and we were more than happy to work with her to find a date that worked for her and us.”

Conley said he and Jackson briefly considered having her fly in for an hour to present her address and then fly out but ultimately decided that rescheduling the event was preferable because it would give her the opportunity to spend an entire day in the Mahoning Valley.

“Both Cheryle and I believe it is critically important for her to have the time to consult with my staff, tour the Valley and meet with community leaders,” he said. “She’s made the Chicago Urban League a model of progress and innovation, and we want to make sure she has time to evaluate our programs and offer her advice and counsel. I’m grateful that she’s carved out a day from her incredibly hectic schedule to support our efforts.”
