Urban League to mark anniversary at dinner

The Greater Warren-Youngstown Urban League will meet for the organizations’ 79th anniversary dinner on Sept. 17 at McMenamy’s in Niles.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Cheryle Jackson, president of the Chicago Urban League and Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate Seat from Illinois.

Considered one of the nation’s most influential black women, Jackson became the first woman to be named to the office of affiliate president of the century-old civil rights and empowerment organization.

She is also the first black woman to be chosen president of communications at the National Public Radio in Washington and of the Senior Government Affairs Department of Amtrak.

Jackson has successfully teamed with local, state and national business leaders to rebuild communities and create solid opportunities for minorities.

The local organization, which is in the process of rebuilding its foundation and refining its advocacy and empowerment role in the Mahoning Valley, will unveil its new model, VALLEY VISION2020 at the dinner.

Those interested in attending the event should contact the Urban League office at (330) 394-4316.
