The Columbiana Street Fair opens at 5 p.m. and runs through Saturday on Main Street, which will be closed to traffic. Hours are 5 to 11 p.m. today and Friday and noon to midnight Saturday. The festival features rides, vendors, food and all the usual stuff, but more importantly, it’s a homecoming weekend for just about everybody who ever lived in Columbiana.

Youngstown State University Theatre opens its season with a student production of the disturbing “How I Learned to Drive,” which deals with child abuse. Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. today through Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday, in Spotlight Arena Theater, inside Bliss Hall on the YSU campus. Call (330) 941-3105 for tickets.

Community theater season begins in earnest Friday, when three local houses launch their seasons.

The Oakland Center for the Arts is presenting the world premiere of Sandy Vansuch’s one-woman show, “Love, Ludmilla.” Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The theater is at 220 W. Boardman St., downtown Youngstown.

Victorian Players is presenting “The Elephant Man,” the true and tragic story of a disfigured man in 19th-century England. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. The theater is at 702 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown (across from Flynn’s Tires). Call (330) 746-5455.

Trumbull New Theatre, 5883 Youngstown-Warren Road, Niles, is offering the ever-popular musical “Bye-Bye Birdie,” which tells the story of a rock star who gets drafted. Curtain times are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Call (330) 652-1103.

The final Party on the Plaza of the year begins around 8 p.m. Friday in front of Buffalo Wild Wings on Wick Avenue, downtown Youngstown. The outdoor bash will feature two bands: Frequent Season and Rudy and the Professionals.k

Wish You Were Here, possibly the region’s best Pink Floyd tribute band, headlines a concert at Warren Community Amphitheatre. The band will perform with full stage lighting and effects to recreate a classic Floyd show. Admission is $6, which includes a $6-off coupon at the nearby Sunrise Restaurant in downtown Warren. Wish You Were Here will begin around 8 p.m.

Speaking of Pink Floyd tribute bands, The Polka Floyd Show will perform at 9 p.m. Saturday at Cleveland’s Beachland Ballroom in a concert that falls under the category of “other.” It’s exactly what the name implies — the music of Pink Floyd, played polka style. All night. The Toledo-based band calls itself “the only polka-style Pink Floyd tribute band,” and there’s really no point in checking to make sure they’re telling the truth. Polka Floyd has actually been getting a lot of positive press lately, including this comment from Ryan Bunch of Toledo City Paper:

“Polka Floyd plays remarkably good renditions of all your favorite Floyd tunes with a polka twist that’ll have you jaw-dropped in awe at the stellar musicianship while laughing at the pure ridiculousness of it all at the same time.”

The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra begins its season with a Pops concert titled “Broadway Now!” Guest vocalists will be Broadway regulars Rob Evan and Capathia Jenkins. The concert starts at 8 p.m. in Powers Auditorium, Youngstown. Call (330) 744-0264 for tickets.

The Grey to Green Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in Wick Park on Youngstown’s North Side. The annual event offers entertainment and information on environmental causes.

jThe second annual Pabstolutely Festival begins at noon at the Royal Oaks, 92 Oak St., Youngstown. Fourteen bands will keep the music coming all day at the free, outdoor event.
