Obama will visit GM plant in Lordstown, report says

STAFF/WIRE REPORT

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama plans to make a speech at General Motors assembly plant in Lordstown next week, according to a report from the Detroit News.

The White House won’t confirm the visit yet, but officials told the newspaper the president is planning the trip Tuesday as part of a Midwest swing to talk about jobs and the economy.

The president plans to highlight the fact that GM is recalling 1,050 workers next month to return to work at the Trumbull County plant.

It would be Obama’s first visit to a U.S. auto plant as president and the first since both GM and Chrysler Group LLC emerged from bankruptcy earlier this summer.

The White House previously announced Obama would fly to Pittsburgh on Tuesday to address the annual convention of the AFL-CIO. Lordstown is about 75 miles from Pittsburgh.

A second shift will begin at the Lordstown complex Oct. 5.
