1950 documentary ‘Columbiana’ on screen

COLUMBIANA — The Fairfield Township Ruritan Club, the Fairfield Township Historical Society and the Main Street Theater are sponsoring two free screenings of the movie “Columbiana,” a documentary produced in 1950 in the town.

The showings will be at 1 and 4 p.m. Saturday, during the Columbiana Street Fair.

The movie, which has been digitally updated, might bring back memories for older residents, and is an example of a simpler time.

The Ruritan Club will sell hot dogs under the marquee of the theater from noon until 7 p.m. The historical society will be on hand to answer questions and sell DVDs of “Columbiana."

Instructor’s compositions performed at festivals

SHARON, Pa. — Ferruccio Germani, composer and instructor in music at Penn State-Shenango, recently had one of his compositions played at international festivals in Italy and Peru.

Germani’s composition, titled “Prelude I, II, III and IV,” was played by Italian organist Alberto Patron at the Italian Concerto Ecco e sorta la primavera della grazia. Patron played Germani’s music with Ensemble Quinto Evangelo, an Italian musical group that focuses on contemporary compositions. Germani is the American composer-in-residence for Ensemble Quinto Evangelo and is presently writing more music for it.

At the XXIV Festival Internacional De Flautists in Peru, Germani’s music was played by pianist Scott Tinney, who is a specialist in contemporary music and has played for composers throughout the world.

Germani was recently inducted into Montclair Who’s Who in North America, a national organization for teaching excellence. He received his bachelor’s degree in education from Ohio University, a master’s degree from the University of Akron and a doctorate from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
