Tropical Storm Fred nears hurricane power at sea

MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Fred is approaching hurricane strength in the eastern Atlantic, while Tropical Storm Linda is moving slowly far out over the Pacific.

Fred’s maximum sustained winds increased to near 70 mph Tuesday afternoon.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Fred is expected to become a hurricane by sometime today.
