NYPL teams accepting contributions for Lucas
NILES — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers and the New York-Penn League have announced that each of the participating clubs in the NYPL playoffs will collect donations in support of Lucas Holko, the 4-year-old boy who was injured by a foul ball last week at a Scrappers game at Eastwood Field.
All money raised through the collection will be contributed to the Lucas Holko Fund on behalf of the New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation and its 14 member teams.
The Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, was created in 2003. The Foundation’s mission is to provide focus and support for the collective charitable and community efforts of the New York-Penn League and its clubs. Its motto is “The Power of Baseball, the Power of Giving.”
Participating teams in the playoffs, which started Tuesday, are the Scrappers, Brooklyn Cyclines, Staten Island Yankees and Lowell Spinners.
After opening the playoffs on the road for Game 1 on Tuesday, the Scrappers play host to Brooklyn today at 7:05 p.m. at Eastwood Field.
Game 3, if necessary, will be Thursday at Eastwood Field.
The championship series will start Friday or Saturday.
After being struck by a foul ball at a Scrappers game Sept. 2, Lucas continues his recovery at the Akron Children’s Hospital.
The family has set up the Lucas Holko Fund to help with expenses associated with the accident and his recovery. Contributions can be made at any area Cortland Banks location.
