Emig wins flight title

OLEAN, N.Y. — Youngstown State junior Rob Emig won his singles flight while the duo of Patrick Hamning and Michael Kathary won the No. 1 doubles competition as the men’s tennis team opened fall competition at the St. Bonaventure Invitational.

Emig posted a 3-0 mark to earn the No. 5 singles flight crown. On Sunday, Emig defeated Nathaniel Fleming of Saint Francis (Pa.) by a 6-3, 6-2 score to claim first in his flight. On Saturday, Emig picked up a 7-6, 6-2 win over Buffalo’s Mitch Zenaty. Also on Saturday, he beat St. Bonaventure’s Luis Guevara in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

In doubles play, Kathary and Hamning posted a 2-1 to earn the flight victory. The duo beat Buffalo and St. Bonaventure, but dropped a tie-breaker decision 8-6 to Saint Francis.

Tariq Ismail posted two wins at No. 1 singles winning against Saint Francis and St. Bonaventure. Hamning earned a singles win at No. 2 against the Red Flash.

3 MVC football teams named in Top 25

YOUNGSTOWN — Three Missouri Valley Football Conference teams are ranked in the Top 25 in the first regular-season FCS coaches poll, led by two teams in the Top 10.

University of Northern Iowa leads the way as the Panthers are ranked No. 5, followed by Southern Illinois (8) and South Dakota State (25). Western Illinois and North Dakota State received votes.

8 Renegades picked for classic

COLUMBIANA – Eight players from the Crestview Renegades minor league football team, were selected to represent the Lake Erie League in the Lake Erie League vs Heartland League 2009 All-Star Classic.

Coty Bilsky (Crestview), Nick Carfagna (Beaver Local), Shayn Danks (Crestview), Derek Frederick (Salem), Ryan Moore (Carrollton), Jordan Reynolds (Crestview) and Ethan Russell (Beaver Local) were selected for Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. game that will be at Perry High School in Perry.

Cardinals put Dykes on practice squad

PHOENIX — For the second straight year, defensive tackle Keilen Dykes (Chaney High) has been signed to the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad. Dykes, who played at West Virginia University, was among the players waived by the Cardinals on Friday.

Sizemore surgery set

CLEVELAND — All-Star outfielder Grady Sizemore of the Cleveland Indians has been scheduled to have arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow at the Cleveland Clinic on Wednesday.

Team physician Dr. Mark Schickendantz will perform the operation. Sizemore also needs to undergo lower abdominal surgery, but no timetable has been set for that procedure.

Sizemore, who had missed only nine games over the previous four seasons, played with pain all season until being shut down Friday.

Browns’ Rogers returns to practice

BEREA — Cleveland Browns Pro Bowl nose tackle Shaun Rogers returned to practice, increasing the chances he’ll play in Sunday’s season opener against Minnesota.

Rogers did not play in the exhibition season with an unspecified injury.
