Convict jailed
CANFIELD — A convicted sexual predator is in Mahoning County jail on suspicion of violating his parole.
Vernon Clay, 75, of North Lima was spotted by his parole officer in Kiddieland at the Canfield Fairgrounds on Sunday afternoon. Bill Arnaut, chief of fairgrounds’ police department, said the parole officer saw Clay and contacted the grounds’ police before making the arrest.
Arnaut said Clay had been released from prison in April where he was serving time on a gross sexual imposition conviction from 2005.
“He was in violation of his parole by being in Kiddieland, by being in the area of children at all,” he said. “Whether we prevented something from happening we’ll never know.”
If convicted, this would be Clay’s third offense, Arnaut said.
