LIBERTY — The township, through a grant from Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District, will conduct its annual scrap-tire collection.
The program is a drop-off collection from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. No tires will be accepted before or after these dates. There is a limit of eight tires per residence. Tires must be off rims. Only passenger-car and light-truck tires will be accepted.
Residents can bring their scrap tires to the township administration building, 1315 Church Hill-Hubbard Road.

Columbiana Rose Show
COLUMBIANA — The 49th annual Columbiana Rose Show will be Saturday at National City Bank on Main Street during the street fair.
Growers are invited to enter their favorite roses — they must be named — between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. that day at the bank. None will be accepted after that time.
Roses will be judged at 1:30 p.m., and the display will be open to the public at 3 p.m. The roses will be sold at 8 p.m.

Robotics event at mall
NILES — The Art Outreach Gallery at Eastwood Mall will host a 2009 rookie First Lego League robotics team in an effort to become a hub of educational robotics activity. Schools are encouraged to participate and can apply for a grant to cover the cost for their team’s rookie year.
The 2009 FLL challenge transportation-based theme, “Smart Move,” will be unveiled Thursday online. As part of the yearly competition, teams of up to 10 students will use the Lego Mindstorms NXT robotics system to design and build a robot to execute a series of mission.

Festival queen contest
LISBON — Young women age 15 to 20 are invited to compete for the title of Johnny Appleseed Festival Queen and to represent the community at the annual festival Sept. 19 and 20.
Applications are available at the Lisbon Chamber of Commerce and must be submitted by Wednesday.
Judging will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, and the winner will receive prizes provided by local merchants and individuals. She and her court also will travel by limousine to East Liverpool Motor Lodge for a pre-festival dinner.

Architecture for kids
YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Historical Center presents “History Kids” with a program Saturday titled “An Architectural Adventure.” Students will tour both Wick Park and downtown Youngstown from 1 to 3 p.m. to study buildings, their famous occupants and style of architecture.
“History Kids” is for students age 8 to 14. The cost of this program is $10 for Ohio Historical Society members and $12 for nonmembers. Advance registration is required.
