Kent State edges YSU women, 1-0

YOUNGSTOWN — With a well-timed free kick by senior Catherine Marosszeky with just 31 seconds remaining in the second overtime period, the Kent State women’s soccer team (2-2-0) halted a brief two-game losing streak Sunday with a 1-0 win over Youngstown State.

Marosszeky’s 25-yard free kick from the edge of the penalty box marked her 14th career goal and her seventh game-winner as a Golden Flash.

“That was a huge goal and a huge lift for the team,” head coach Rob Marinaro said. “It’s not easy to go to Youngstown to play.”

YSU goalkeeper Nicole Kline recorded a season-high nine saves. Kara Cooper took two shots but her consecutive games streak of scoring at least one goal was snapped at four. Rochelle Boone tallied the Penguins lone shot on goal.

Prior to the game-winning free kick, Youngstown State’s Katie Peterlin was whistled and cautioned for a foul on Kent State’s Kelly Heaton on the left corner of the penalty box.

From there, Marosszeky teed up and fired, finding the side netting at the far post.

“With that much pressure, it’s one of the most difficult shots to take,” Marinaro said.

The Golden Flashes outshot Youngstown State 18-7 in shots and 10-1 in shots on goal.
