Session to focus on protection from scams
STAFF REPORT
HOWLAND — Learn the latest scams targeting consumers and find out how to protect yourself Thursday when the representative from Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray’s office speaks from 11 a.m. to noon at the Howland Senior Center, 8273 High St.
Scams tend to increase during tough economic times, Cordray said. To help the Howland community protect itself from fraud, a representative from Cordray’s office will discuss and answer questions about consumer rights.
The attorney general’s office serves as an advocate for consumers who are victimized by unfair and deceptive business practices.
Consumer protection efforts at the state, multistate and federal levels have achieved landmark settlements and millions of dollars in civil penalties and restitution for Ohioans.
The office also provides a process to resolve disputes between consumers and businesses.
Last year, the office received more than 25,000 consumer complaints and returned $3.7 million to consumers who had filed complaints.
