Toothman’s arm helps Salem rally; Kopachy garners first win as coach


SALEM — Trent Toothman completed 19 of 23 passes for 310 yards and three TDs and also ran 10 times for 63 yards and three TDs as the Salem High football team rallied from a 14-0 deficit to beat United 62-16 at Reilly Stadium and give Mike Kopachy’s his first victory as Quakers coach.

Ben Eisel caught six passes for 180 yards and TDs for Salem (1-1), while Zach Penick added three receptions for 86 yards.

Kopachy is in his first year with the Quakers after a successful run at Western Reserve.

Josh McLaughlin threw for 151 yards and a TD for United (0-2). Zach Taylor caught three passes for 51 yards and a TD and Brett Ward had a 50-yard interception return for a score.

Newton Falls 35, Southeast 0

NEWTON FALLS — John Davis ran 14 times for 112 yards and two touchdowns and Newton Falls rolled up a 28-0 halftime lead en route to an easy win.

Anthony Kline added 78 yards on eight carries and QB Matt Brazin threw for 71 yards and ran for 73 for the Tigers (2-0).

Eric Fleming had 41 yards rushing and Anthony Pennington had 40 for Southeast (0-2).

Garrettsville Garfield 32, Champion 10

GARRETTSVILLE — Brenton Semplak rushed 16 times for 99 yards and two touchdowns as Garfield (2-0) outscored Champion 19-0 in the second half to pull away.

Bob Bright added 77 yards rushing and two TDs for Garfield, which also benefited from five Champion turnovers — four fumbles and an interception.

For the Flashes (0-2), Nathan Vesey rushed 15 times for 145 yards, a touchdown and a field goal.
