4 families to attend free
CANFIELD — The Canfield Fair Board will treat four families to free admission today.
Timm Schreiber, fair board member, said two families will be chosen in the morning and two in the afternoon at the main gates to receive free admission, all-day ride passes for their children and a choice of a free dinner or tickets to the truck-and-tractor pull tonight or to see George Jones and Hank Williams Jr. on Sunday night.
Schreiber said the families will be randomly chosen. He said if it goes well today, more families will be chosen Sunday.
“This is one of the ways we’re trying to give back to the community,” he said. “It’s something the fair board has committed to this year.”
Kaluza going to the fair
CANFIELD — Joe Kaluza will be stopping by The Kaluza Project tent this afternoon.
Friends and family of Kaluza, 43, who was paralyzed when he was shot in 2008, organized the Kaluza Project to help raise money to build a new home that will be more handicapped-accessible.
Anna Fitzgerald, Kaluza’s sister, said they would need to raise between $250,000 and $300,000 to afford the home and equipment that would allow Kaluza to move more freely with his wheelchair.
Fitzgerald said all it will take to raise the money is a little generosity from fairgoers.
“If 300,000 people walk through this fair, and everyone gives $1, we’ll have no problem getting this house built,” she said. “The hearts of our community will make this happen.”
Attendance shows rise
CANFIELD — Attendance for Thursday was up more than 700 from 2008.
Timm Schreiber, fair board member, said Thursday’s figure was 41,307. The same day last year was 40,572. He said he expects the nice weather will draw in even more people this weekend.
