Glass Harp and more to play at barbecue

HOWLAND — A music festival featuring some of the region’s top names from years gone by will be Sunday at Up A Creek Tavern to raise money for breast-cancer patients.

The Benefit Barbecue Reunion will bring together original members from The Shaddows, Glass Harp, Mom’s Apple Pie, Holes in the Road, Attica Wahoos, The Quick, MF Rattlesnake and more. Joining that lineup will be some current acts, including Damian Knapp, The Kellys and Madam Weez.

Admission is $10 donation, which includes the barbecue and music. The event will run from 2 to 10 p.m.

The benefit concert was organized by Tommy McCoy, a recording artist and Warren native who lost his wife to breast cancer. Proceeds will go to patients receiving treatment at Ireland Cancer Center at Trumbull Memorial Hospital.

McCoy, a 1972 graduate of Howland High School, played with many of the region’s top bands, including The James Gang, Glass Harp, The Human Beinz, The Holes, The Jaggs, Inside Out, The Shaddows, Baskerville Hounds, Left End, Mom’s Apple Pie, My Uncle’s Army Buddies, Merry Christmas, Freeman Sound, Cracker Jack, Poppy, LAW and I Don’t Care.

Volleyball tournament at Conneaut Lake Park

CONNEAUT LAKE, Pa. — A beach volleyball tournament will begin at noon Sunday at Conneaut Lake Park beach. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome to enter this recreational, family-oriented tournament. Coed teams of four will compete in two divisions (backyard and intermediate), with a three-game guarantee. Trophies will be awarded to the first- and second-place teams.

Artist’s work on display at Fellows Gardens

YOUNGSTOWN — Noreen Yazvac, an administrative assistant at Youngstown State University, is exhibiting her collection of floral paintings, titled “Floral Series,” now through Sept. 27 in the D.D. and Velma Davis Education and Visitor Center at Fellows Riverside Gardens, Mill Creek Park.

The exhibit in the Weller Gallery features a range of materials and mediums.

Yazvac earned a bachelor of arts degree in art history with a minor in studio art from YSU in 2006 and also studied painting under the private instruction of artists Celeste Moran, Cherie Mohn, Christopher Leeper and Tom Antonishak.

A Boardman resident, Yazvac joined the university in 1994 and works at the Marion G. Resch Center for Student Progress.

Theater offers lessons

SALEM — Salem Community Theatre’s performing arts program will hold an open house and registration Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 5-7 p.m. The program is offering dance lessons for age 3 through adult, voice lessons, and an opportunity to join the Children’s and Youth Chorus.
