Ohio mayor will remove name from veterans memorial

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — When the city of Akron dedicated a bench at the Ohio Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Park, it included the mayor’s name, and that has riled some veterans.

Now, Mayor Don Plusquellic says that was a mistake, and he will raise private money to replace the bench with a more appropriate inscription. Plusquellic says he meant no offense to veterans and simply didn’t devote enough time to the matter.

Plusquellic’s draft number didn’t come up during the Vietnam war.

The memorial park is located in Clinton, south of Akron.
