Soccer age tests

ZURICH — Bone tests will be performed on soccer players at the Under-17 World Cup in Nigeria to catch teams with over-age players.

Soccer’s governing body said Monday the MRI tests will “protect the integrity of the tournament” and serve “the spirit of fair play.”

The decision follows reports from Nigeria that the host nation intended to select older players for the Oct. 24-Nov. 15 tournament. Nigeria, the defending champion, has a tradition of success at international age-group events but has been dogged by rumors of fielding ineligible players.

FIBA Hall of Fame

GENEVA — Oscar Robertson and coach Pete Newell will be inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame for leading the United States to the basketball gold medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics.

The list of 11 inductees announced Monday includes Kay Yow, who led the U.S. women to the 1988 Olympic title.

Newell coached one of the most powerful teams in Olympic history. Robertson, Jerry West and Jerry Lucas were on the squad that went 8-0 and beat its opponents by more than 42 points a game. Robertson averaged 17 points, tying Lucas for the team lead.

Swim champ, 71 wins tough fight

NOOSAVILLE, Australia — Dawn Fraser, who won swimming gold medals at three Olympics, fought off and helped capture a man who tried to rob her home north of Brisbane.

The 71-year-old Fraser said Monday the man grabbed her but she fought back.

“This guy came out of the gate and grabbed me and I grabbed him by the ear and I kicked him in the groin,” she told several Australian television stations.

“So he had to let me go.”

She said a male friend made the man lie on his stomach until police arrived on Sunday.

Fraser won eight Olympic medals, including four golds, and held the 100-meter freestyle world record from 1956 to 1972. She won the 100 free at the 1956, 1960 and 1964 Olympics.
