WARREN — A city man charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm has been sentenced to one year in prison for his part in a fatal shootout with another Warren man Jan. 18 at the Lancer Court apartments on the West Side.
Taemarr L. Walker, 19, of Jackson Street Southwest received the sentence Monday in the courtroom of Judge Peter Kontos of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
The sentence resulted from Walker’s pleading guilty to the weapons charge, and a cocaine possession charge dating back to 2008.
The weapons charge stemmed from Walker’s having a gun Jan. 18, the night Ahmaze D. King, 26, of Lener Avenue Southwest, was shot to death at an apartment where Walker was visiting with a woman.
During testimony in Warren Municipal Court, Detective Wayne Mackey of the Warren Police Department said the woman told police that Walker told her to get into the apartment kitchen and “stay there” moments before gunfire erupted.
King was later found inside the apartment, and Mackey said Walker was a “person of interest” in King’s death.
Chris Becker, an assistant Trumbull County prosecutor, could not be reached to comment.
Warren police also arrested Walker early Sunday and charged him with being a felon in possession of a firearm again, along with receiving stolen property and felonious assault, after officers found him allegedly driving a stolen vehicle and having a gun under his seat.
The felonious assault charge stemmed from a July 23 incident.
Walker pleaded innocent to those charges in Warren Municipal Court Monday and is being held on $150,000 bond on those charges.
