Ohio senators curious about casino money

COLUMBUS (AP) — Ohio senators are curious about the possibility of plugging the state’s budget hole with money from casinos, should they be approved by voters next week.

Two senators asked officials in Gov. Ted Strickland’s administration today whether the state could use potential revenue from proposed casinos in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Toledo.

Republican Sen. Jeff Wagoner asked whether the state could use $200 million from casino licenses to fund education and partially offset an $850 million budget gap. Democratic Sen. Dale Miller asked whether the state could give less to local governments that are to receive casino tax revenue.

Tax Commissioner Rich Levin said he wasn’t sure. Lawmakers would have to pass legislation to implement casinos if they are approved by voters.
